Start a Work at Home Business...Online!

Now Easier Than Ever

Yes, the thought of learning how to start a work at home business online may be a bit daunting. After all, the web opens up an entire world to you...literally! There's so many places to go, so much to learn!

Have you ever run to the store for something as simple as ice cream only to find yourself in an aisle with endless choices? Once upon a time we mainly chose from chocolate, vanilla and a handful of others...but now, there's vanilla mocha prafait, raspberry almond swirl, and Jen's fave, peanut butter cup, among hundreds of other enticing choices.

Well, it's kind of like that on the internet. When you're getting started on building an online business, it can take quite a while to research and sort through the myriad of options available at every click.

Here are some of the things you'll need to consider before jumping in to starting a work at home business:

  • Do you have an existing business you would like to bring online? Erin has successfully cornered the home organization market in her neck of the woods by taking her skills and selling them online at www.homeorganizeit.com.
She gives her visitors information and a service, both of which generate sales.

  • If you don't have an existing business, decide whether you want to start a service business or just provide information to your visitors. Because she didn't have a skill to sell, Jen decided to share her knowledge of dogs on her website www.favorite-puppy-names.com. So even without a specific "job," you can still make money by selling your knowledge. It's called being an infopreneur and you can learn more about it and get ideas on up-and-coming website services and topics people are searching for by visiting our Hot Niches page.

  • Do you have time to create an online business? This is key, but not insurmountable if your initial reaction is "no." We're all too busy. We work jobs, have families, hobbies, and other obligations that chip away at our day. But we also waste time, watching TV, playing video games, surfing the internet! Can you dedicate 30 minutes a day to building your business? Of course you can!

  • Do you have the motivation and dedication to succeed? Now this one isn't negotiable. Starting a home-based online business doesn't have to be expensive, but it does take sweat equity. Most likely, you'll find yourself spending every spare minute building your website and six months down the road, you may receive your first check. It's very easy to lose focus and patience when you don't see immediate rewards. But...stick with it! A year from now, two years from now and you'll have a different story to tell.

If you answered YES to all of those questions, then it's time to get going and start brainstorming ideas.

  • Have a topic or niche in mind for your website? You're now at the most crucial step of the building process. Research, research, research. Now you do the leg work, finding out if people actually want what you've got to sell. And more importantly, are they willing to spend money on it?

When doing our research for our site, we find using a product such as SiteBuildIt! works well, as it provides all the tools you need for studying your niche AND serves up excellent web hosting and site building templates.

This site was built using SiteBuildIt! and you can learn more about SBI! here (link opens in new window to our partner, Sitesell.com).

Another good resource for doing your research is Wordtracker. Use their free trial to get some idea of how successful your site concept will be.

  • You'll also need a domain name, site hosting, and site design. Once you've decided what you will make your website about, these are the next steps to getting your new online business up and running.

For designing your site, we also really like XSitePro, a terrific product that truly streamlines the process of building websites. While the price of the software doesn't include research capabilities or hosting, there's a lot to recommend it.

Learn more about SiteBuildIt! and XSitePro by visiting our Product Reviews. There, you'll find an honest assessment of the pros and cons to help you make an informed decision about which one best suits your needs.
