Copywriting Tips That Work
6 Powerful Copywriting Tips All Online Business Owners Need To KnowCopywriting is the one skill that all online business owners really need to learn. As an online marketer you communicate through words and if those words aren't effectively conveying your message, then you're going to struggle to succeed.
Tip #1 - Know Your Target Market Good copywriters know exactly WHO they're writing for before they even start writing. They write as though they are talking directly to ONE PERSON and try to keep that same person in mind at all times. Try visualizing your ideal customer and what s/he might be needing. Ask yourself things like... - Who is this person exactly?
- What is her problem?
- How can you solve it?
Pretend that you and your future customer are one in the same. Sure, you are speaking TO this person, but try to think about it as if you are speaking THROUGH her. Keeping your customer in mind at all times is the secret to good copywriting. If you try to reach too many people with your copy you'll end up missing your target altogether and you definitely don't want that! So before starting, know exactly WHO you’re writing your copy for and keep reminding yourself to stick to it.
Tip #2 - Make Your Web Copy Easy To ReadIt's very important that you don't go on and on, with long paragraphs and no breaks. Try using a lot of sub-titles to separate your web copy into smaller chunks. By following this tip you'll make your copy easier to read. Lots of white space is much easier on the eye and will help keep people reading longer. Make Intriguing Headlines - Use clear headlines throughout your copy to guide the reader. Your main headline should be in BOLD and/or LARGE LETTERS to grab the reader's attention. It's the headline that first catches your reader's attention so it's extremely important. Try using a benefit-focused headline, which explains in powerful detail how you can help solve the customer’s problem. Then use sub-headlines throughout the copy to keep the reader intrigued so they will keep reading. Don't Use Big Words - Online writing is different than the writing you did in English class. For this type of writing, you can pretty much relax about all those rules your teacher taught you. Online writing is casual and needs to convey emotion and a clear purpose. You should aim to speak to the person as though you're sitting down with them and chatting over a coffee. There is no need to try to impress with big words and long adjectives or you may quickly lose your prospects. Involve The Reader - Speak directly to your reader. Ask questions such as: "Sounds like a pretty good offer, eh?" Also add suggestions like "Top with fresh berries for added flavor and health benefits!" or "to attain maximum results use this product three to four times a week." Watch Your Pacing - Always read through your copy and listen to the way it moves. Try to vary your beats. In other words, you don't want to have a few short, choppy sentences in a row followed by one long sentence. Although some grammatical tips may help you with this, the rules are not as important as developing an ear for the flow.
Tip #3 - Be PersuasiveIf you love your product that's great but be careful not to sound salesy or forceful. Your customers will likely want to hear from other people who have used your product too. Include customer testimonials and the more information you can include the better. Try to include the person’s full name, city, state, website URL and if possible a picture of that person. The more information your testimonial includes the more persuasive and believable it will be to the customer.
Tip #4 - Turn Passive Into Passion A passive voice lacks passion! By replacing your passive verbs with action verbs your copy will come alive right before your eyes. Here are some examples to help you see the difference... Passive I am a user of this product. Active I use this product. Passive We are here to offer you services to improve your health, slim the waistline, and enhance your body image. Active We provide exceptional services that are targeted to improve your health, slim the waistline, and enhance your overall body image.
Tip #5 - It’s Not All About You In fact, it’s not about you at all! Effective copywriting is concerned with the needs of your visitor. It's SO easy to lose sight of this! As the writer, you're needs come later. It's your visitors needs that come first. It's okay to add a little personal information about yourself in order to gain trust and to explain why your customer should trust you, but always keep in mind what you can do for THEM when you are writing. Go through your copy and see if it contains a lot of "I’s"? If so, you may need to tone them down. All you have to do is go back and change most of those "I's" to "You's". At the risk of being repetitive, always try to remember that your writing should be about the customer.
Tip # 6 -Don’t Forget The Call Your call to action that is! You must guide your visitors and tell them exactly what you expect them to do. Most people respond better to an offer if you tell them exactly what they need to do next. If you want them to click over and purchase your weight loss product, you should say so, and make sure you say so in a clear way that promotes all the benefits of your products. For example, you may say "Click here to learn how you can lose those last 10 pounds and keep it off for good". Be precise in your wording and don"t forget to always include a clear call to action.
